Local festivals in Villena

The Moors and Christians Festival is Villena’s most representative usual celebration. It runs from 4 to 9 September in honour of the Virgen de las Virtudes and brings together fourteen comparsas, seven Moorish and seven Christian.

Usual celebration

During these days, the Junta Central de Fiestas, the Junta de la Virgen, comparsas, bands and thousands of festival participants participate. The opening speech, Fiesta del Pasodoble, Gran Entrada, parades, embassies and religious events fill the central streets and the area around Atalaya Castle. The patron saint’s image travels from the Santuario de las Virtudes in a pilgrimage to preside over the festival; this devotion is linked to the patronage established in 1474.

Other celebrations

The local calendar also includes the Christmas and Epiphany festivities at Las Virtudes, with community events on the sanctuary esplanade, and the October funfair at the fairground.
