Local festivals in Hoyo de Manzanares
The Virgen de la Encina patronal festivities are usually celebrated over several days in early September, with 8 September as the patron's day. The opening address, mass, procession and floral offering are joined by parades, bull runs, cucañas, sport and open-air dances in Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Caldereta, the parish church and Las Eras sports centre.
La Caldereta
During the festivities, La Caldereta Day brings residents and visitors together throughout the day around large cauldrons of bull-meat stew. Asociación La Caldereta maintains the communal supper and traditional Riego del Vino, a custom documented since 1767 and linked to farming and shepherding families who gave thanks for the harvest at the end of summer.
Other events: peñas and traditions of the Sierra
Peñas, sports clubs, associations, the parish, brotherhood and municipal festivities committee sustain much of the celebration. Their parades, meals, games and participation in carrying the Virgin between the church and her chapel turn the town-centre streets and squares into places for intergenerational fellowship.
