Local festivals in El Escorial

The patronal San Bernabé festivities are usually celebrated for more than a week around 11 June. The opening address and the fairground launch a programme of music, folk culture, sport, communal meals and religious observances across the town. The industrial and craft fair also recalls El Escorial's historic free-market privilege dating from the reign of Philip II.

Virgen de la Herrería pilgrimage

On the first Sunday in September, the Virgen de la Herrería brotherhood, local clubs and many residents accompany the town's patron from San Bernabé Church to her chapel in the former Fresneda estate. Decorated carts, rondón and mountain jota dancing, dulzaina music, the offering and a countryside gathering distinguish a pilgrimage recognised as a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest.

Other celebrations: Mozos, Casados y Viudos

Between late July and early August, residents themselves organise the Mozos, Casados y Viudos festival. Three women presidents, accompanied by a young man, lead a participatory tradition documented in the municipal archive since 1918 and associated with dancing, sport and community gatherings. San Roque celebrations around Navalquejigo and Los Arroyos complete the local calendar.
