Local festivals in Baiona

The Festa da Arribada is usually celebrated on the first weekend in March and commemorates the arrival of the caravel Pinta in Baiona harbour on 1 March 1493. For three days, the historic centre and A Ribeira promenade are transformed by a medieval market, crafts, music, theatre, demonstrations of trades and historical re-enactments. Traders, cultural associations, residents and visitors take part in period dress in this internationally recognised festival.

Virgen de la Roca and San Cosme and San Damián pilgrimages

On the last Sunday in August, the Virgen de la Roca pilgrimage brings pilgrims, families and folk groups together for a day in Mercedes de la Escalera park, at the foot of the monument inaugurated in 1930, with mass, music and an outdoor meal. On 26 September, San Cosme and San Damián fill Plaza de Santa Liberata and nearby streets with a procession, traditional crafts, honey, walnuts and country produce.

Other events: maritime and parish celebrations

The calendar reaches across the municipality's settlements: Virgen del Carmen is celebrated on 16 July in Baiona, Santa Mariña on 18 July in Baíña, Santa Cristina on 24 July in A Ramallosa and Virgen de la Anunciada on the first weekend in August. Brotherhoods, festival committees, parishes, seafarers, musicians and residents sustain the processions and community gatherings.
