Local festivals in Betanzos

The San Roque patronal festivities are usually celebrated from 14 to 25 August. On 16 August, the release and ascent of the great paper Globo draw thousands of residents and visitors before the burning of the traditional San Roque façade and a firework display.

River outings to Os Caneiros

Two festive outings travel up the River Mandeo from Paseo da Tolerancia to Campo dos Caneiros. Boats decorated with flags, garlands and lanterns carry groups of revellers to the sound of brass bands; food and music are shared at the riverside field, and the return ends with an evening dance and fireworks by Ponte Vella.

Other celebrations and historic events

The Globo and river outings have taken place since the 19th century and form part of Betanzos's collective memory. The festivities also preserve older guild dances and neighbourhood celebrations, maintained over time by cultural societies, the Municipal Music Band and other local groups.
