Local festivals in Palamós
The Sant Joan Festa Major is usually celebrated over several days around 23 and 24 June. The giants Pere el Gran and Constança de Sicília parade through the streets, while the Flama del Canigó, opening speech, bonfire, communal dinners, barraques and concerts occupy Parc del Convent dels Agustins, Plaça de Mossèn Gumersind, Platja Gran and other spaces. The Town Council organises the events with cultural, neighbourhood and youth associations.
Palamós Carnival
Carnival lasts for more than a week in February, before Lent. Local groups, comparses, floats and costumed participants join the main parade along Avinguda de la Llibertat to the Museu de la Pesca, as well as street processions, displays, dances and satirical events. The death of Carnestoltes, mourning procession, testament and communal sardine meal close the cycle. Written references to this tradition date back to the 18th century.
Other celebrations: Our Lady of Mount Carmel and maritime tradition
The fishing community honours Our Lady of Mount Carmel around 16 July. The celebration includes a popular dance at Moll Vell, a maritime procession across the bay, a land procession and Mass in Santa Maria church. Havaneres, maritime cooking and activities at the Museu de la Pesca keep Palamós's festive connection with the sea alive.
