Festivals in Suances
Discover the festivals of Suances, where the Virgen del Carmen expresses the town's seafaring identity and San Isidro, the Virgen de las Lindes and celebrations in the villages complete the calendar.
Local festivals in Suances
The Virgen del Carmen, patron of seafarers, is usually celebrated every 16 July and is Suances's most deeply rooted festival. The image leaves the church and is accompanied through the streets to the harbour by seafarers, dance groups, choirs and residents; it then boards a vessel for a procession along the San Martín estuary to Hinojedo, where the Salve Marinera is sung. The day continues with mass, a romería, an open-air dance and fireworks by the coast.
San Isidro and the Virgen de las Lindes
On 15 May, the San Isidro Labrador festival recognises the municipality's farming and livestock traditions. On 15 August, Nuestra Señora de las Lindes maintains a celebration documented since the 16th century, with religious observances and community participation.
Other celebrations in the villages
Cortiguera honours San Juanuco and San Juan; Hinojedo celebrates Corpus Christi and San Pedro; Ongayo holds the Los Remedios and Santiago festivities; Tagle celebrates San Pedro and Guadalupe, while Puente Avíos maintains the Virgen del Rosario and Santa Lucía traditions. Together, these romerías and open-air dances extend the festive calendar across all the settlements of Suances.
