Local festivals in Gernika-Lumo
The patronal Andra Mari and San Roke festivities are usually celebrated from 14 to 18 August. The town centre, Pasealekua and San Juan Ibarra host music, dancing, food traditions, street parades, giants and big-head figures, Basque rural sports and family events, with the Town Council, festival committee, cultural organisations, cuadrillas and associations taking part.
Basque culture and community life
The opening rocket begins several days in which aurresku dancing, bertsolaris, music and dance groups, games, cuadrilla meals and children's activities share the programme. Events spread across the municipality's squares, streets and venues, bringing generations together around local traditions.
Other celebrations: neighbourhoods, fairs and Marijesiak
San Juan Ibarra holds its festivities around 23 June, while Lumo honours San Pedro on 29 June and the following weekend. Lurgorri and Rentería also maintain their summer celebrations. In October, Gernika's Last Monday turns the town into a major agricultural market; from 16 to 24 December, the Marijesiak walk the streets singing their traditional verses.
