Local festivals in Zumarraga

The Santa Isabel festivities are usually celebrated on 2 July and have their central event in the pilgrimage to La Antigua chapel. During high mass, dancers perform the Zumarraga Ezpatadantza before the Virgin, a ceremonial sword dance documented in local accounts since the seventeenth century. Residents and visitors then gather around the chapel for the day's celebrations.

La Antigua, dance and community

Santa María chapel, known as La Antigua, links the celebration with the Beloki landscape and Basque rural architecture. Dancers, txistu players, parish representatives, the Council and local groups maintain a tradition in which procession, music, dance and pilgrimage form a single community sequence.

Other celebrations: Santa Lucía Fair

On 13 December, Zumarraga and Urretxu share the Santa Lucía Fair, one of Gipuzkoa's principal agricultural and livestock gatherings. Calle Urdaneta, Plaza Euskadi, Areizaga-Kalebarren and other venues host livestock, farm machinery, crafts and farmhouse produce, together with txistu and trikitixa music, pelota and rural sports displays.
