Local festivals in Motril
Motril's patronal festivities honour Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza and combine devotion at the sanctuary with daytime and evening fairs, music and family activities. The municipality also observes the May Crosses, San Juan and celebrations in its neighbourhoods and outlying settlements.
Usual celebration
The patronal cycle lasts approximately one week in the first half of August and reaches its principal day on 15 August. The floral offering brings together the brotherhood, Town Council, associations and residents in Parque de los Pueblos de América; the image later leaves the sanctuary in procession through the central streets. The Cortijo del Conde fairground hosts marquees, rides and concerts, while the daytime fair occupies town-centre venues.
Programme for 2026
The Town Council set the festivities for 7 to 15 August. They opened with an address by María Cobos, and the programme spread concerts, daytime and evening fairs and children's activities over more than a week. Performers included Nil Moliner, Pepe y Vizio, Marta Sánchez, 091, Ana Caro and Salistre. The programme closed on 15 August with events honouring the patron and a pyromusical display on Avenida Costa Tropical; the operation involved Local Police, the Fire Service, Civil Protection, National Police and municipal departments.
Local public holidays in 2026
The Andalusian Regional Government resolution declares 4 May and 24 June. These are Motril's two local public holidays in 2026 and correspond to the Day of the Cross and San Juan; neither makes the whole August patronal period a public holiday.
Other events
The municipal calendar places the May Crosses from 1 to 4 May, San Juan on 24 June and Virgen del Carmen celebrations in several coastal settlements during July, alongside neighbourhood and outlying-settlement festivities.
