Local festivals in Monachil

The Virgen del Rosario festivities are usually celebrated over several days around the first week of October in the old town. The church and streets of Monachil host religious observances, cucaña games, ribbon races, music and a communal meal, with the Town Council, associations and residents taking part.

San Antón

Around 17 January, the San Antón festivities occupy a weekend with a morning band parade, mass and a procession of San Antón Abad and San Blas. The Cájar-Monachil Music Band accompanies the route, while the municipal marquee hosts the traditional olla de San Antón stew and a community gathering.

Other celebrations: Virgen de las Nieves

On 5 August, the Virgen de las Nieves brings a night-time pilgrimage from Plaza de Andalucía in Pradollano through Borreguiles to Tajos de la Virgen, below Veleta. Pilgrims carry a small image along the high-mountain path and complete the walk with mass at dawn, a tradition closely linked to Sierra Nevada and centuries of local devotion.
