Cascamorras, Virgen de la Piedad Fair and Baza holidays

The most unique celebration of Baza is the Cascamorras, whose main date is 6 September. The character arrives from Guadix to try to reach the temple of the Virgin of La Piedad without stains; Thousands of participants covered in black paint and oil walk the streets with him. The race, declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, ends at the Merced Church and opens the cycle of the Fair and Festivals.

The usual structure combines the Cascamorras with the patron saint's celebration of the 8 September, when the religious function is held and the Virgen de la Piedad goes out in procession through the central streets. The fairgrounds host booths day and night, attractions, stalls, concerts and family activities. The City Council, the Brotherhood of the Virgen de la Piedad, the Cascamorras Baza Multicultural Association, clubs, security services, neighbourhood associations, bastetanos and visitors participate.

Other distinct celebrations include Santa Bárbara, the town's official patron saint, and the cultural weeks held by neighbourhoods and outlying settlements during spring and summer.
