Local festivals in Tarifa
The Royal Fair and Virgen de la Luz festivities are usually celebrated for more than a week in September, around the 8th. On the first Sunday of the month, the Agricultural Parade accompanies the patron saint from her sanctuary to San Mateo church with riders, horses and residents. The fair continues with religious events, equestrian displays, marquees, music and gatherings at the fairground, organised by the Town Council, the Brotherhood and local groups.
The patron saint's return and pilgrimage tradition
Three Sundays after her arrival, the Virgen de la Luz returns to her chapel accompanied by a popular pilgrimage. Established in 1914, the Agricultural Parade preserves the festival's link with rural life and is recognised as a celebration of tourist interest. Clubs, riders, brotherhoods and families participate in both the outward procession and the return journey.
